Getting Things Done by David Allen
Allen, through years of coaching and training
countless individuals, has come to a fundamental realization. The majority of
stress that people experience stems from mishandled commitments they either
make or accept. Anything that is out of place or not in its proper state is
considered an "open loop." These open loops will constantly demand
your attention if they are not managed appropriately. In order to alleviate
this stress, you must utilize your mind to remove these thoughts from your
consciousness. The reason these thoughts persist is often because you desire a
different outcome than what currently exists. However, you have not clearly
defined the intended outcome, determined the next physical action step, or
established reminders in a reliable system. Until you have clarified your
thoughts, made decisions, and stored the resulting information in a trusted
system, your brain will continue to occupy itself with these unresolved
matters. It is futile to continuously think about something without making any
progress. Therefore, we must transform all the various things we encounter and
accumulate into a well-organized inventory of meaningful actions, projects, and
useful information. To effectively get things done, two essential components
are required: defining what "done" means in terms of outcomes, and
understanding what the process of "doing" entails.
